Student Sucess: How to Get Started

Whether you are just in the information-gathering or consideration stages of beginning or restarting your education or confidently approaching the starting line, there are a few factors to keep in mind. To be successful, these five steps are crucial.

Step One: Accept That You are Beginning an Emotional Journey

No matter your life stage, a new educational beginning can feel intimidating– especially if you are branching out into a new career or life path. Starting something new or picking up where you left off on something you didn't finish might feel daunting.
An Indy 500 racer, Bobby Unser, once said, "Success is where preparation and opportunity meet." When you begin your education journey, remember that preparation will rise to meet the opportunities, and success will soon follow.

Step Two: Walk Through the Application and Admissions Process

Most institutional application and admissions processes are pretty straightforward. Gather pertinent information. Next, create an online profile or account. Many institutions will reach out for the next steps via email, phone contact, or both.
These days, most applications are easy to complete, and admissions decisions are made quickly, as some institutions no longer require standard entrance exam scores. Next, prospective students pay an online application fee based on their degree program or certificate choice.

Step Three: Seek Out Your Institution's Military Student Liason or Office

Some colleges and universities offer personalized approaches for military students in various ways. Are you looking for a way to connect to your new learning community? Inquire if your campus provides virtual or in-person community spaces and events for military students to connect, network, and learn how to navigate resources and services.
Additionally, find out if there are opportunities for career exploration, career coaching or counseling, and someone to help guide you toward utilizing the education benefits you've earned through military service.

Step Four: Divise a Customized Financial Plan

Contact your financial aid counselors to understand how to make your learning experience affordable. They can help you find scholarships, grants and loans. Financial aid counselors may also help create customized financial plans for each unique situation.
Even if you think you might not qualify for financial assistance, you should still explore your options—you may be surprised. If you're using your GI Bill®️ Educational Benefits, understand the application and eligibility requirements before starting your classes.

Step Five: Prepare for Lift Off

Before you know it, you will be on your way to completing your degree program and making plans for the next phase of your journey into a new career or life path. Utilize the resources and relationships at your disposal to help network and prepare for what is next.
The hard work and dedication you put into personal development through additional educational opportunities will pay off for your next big adventure. Your pride in completing this mission will inspire you as you're on your way to tremendous success.
