ESOs, MOUs, and MWRs: How to Partner With Your Local Installation
Partnering with local military installations may seem daunting initially, but it could pay huge dividends over time. This relationship can open numerous doors for higher education institutions, providing access to a unique and diverse student population while supporting the educational goals of service members. Education Service Officers (ESOs) and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) liaisons are key to establishing successful collaborations. Additionally, Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) help create a written agreement between higher education institutions, key players, and services on base. Here are seven tips to help higher education institutions forge strong partnerships with military installations.
1. Connect with Education Service Officers (ESOs)
Education Service Officers (ESOs) are pivotal in facilitating educational opportunities for service members. Establishing a relationship with the ESO at your local military installation can provide valuable insights into the service members' educational needs and preferences. Attend installation education fairs and events where ESOs are present to network and introduce your institution's programs. Typically, a university must be approved by the ESO before they are allowed to engage in advertising.
