How to Stay Healthy During the Winter Months
The cold weather brings a lot of obstacles to staying fit and healthy, especially as the days are shorter and the air is colder. Cold is relative, but if it's colder than you'd like outside, here are some tips to help you stay healthy in the winter months.
Keep Exercising
Exercising in the winter months can be a challenge. If you've gotten out of the habit, start simply with a walk, a yoga session, or some bodyweight workouts. There are so many available online. January is also a great time to try out a new gym, as they usually offer specials. Keep up the hard work, and it'll become a habit in no time.
Drink Water
Drinking water is essential year-round but is especially important in the winter. The cold air and indoor heat can dry out your skin, and it's important to keep hydrated. Drinking water and using some lotion or moisturizer will help keep your skin fresh and healthy.
Eat Your Veggies
Comfort food in the winter is common, but don't forget the fruits and veggies. Winter squash, citrus, and dark, leafy greens are wonderful winter fruit and vegetable options. They're full of fiber, nutrients, and antioxidants and may help ward off some of the pesky colds.
Get Enough Sleep
Following the holiday season, a lot of people are worn out. Sleep is a vital and often overlooked part of staying healthy -- even in the winter. Make sleep a priority and develop a healthy sleep routine, complete with limiting screen time before bed and going to bed about the same time each night.
Bundle Up and Get Outside
It's cold, it's dark, and it may be dreary, but staying inside for days on end is not the best idea. The fresh air really will be good for you, especially if you've got the heater running. Dress warmly, pick a sunny (or not raining) day, and get out there for a good walk. Try to get outside for at least 20 minutes a few times a week.
